Artifact of Note

It’s metal, it’s small (about half an inch wide), and there is a wee little bit of fabric preserved under those flaps at the corners. It’s also very thin, perhaps 1 mm. It was found at a site that dates from the 1790s to the 1860s in the Middle Ohio Valley, and there were about half a dozen of these spread across several 1×1 meter excavation units. With cloth preserved under the flaps, we have considered the possibility that these might be fasteners for clothing, or perhaps tags for bulk goods.
